Red fox | Vulpes fulva rubricosa
Red foxes have been my primary focus for a long while, it's safe to say they are the species that truly has my heart. I’ve invested years into capturing intimate moments and getting to know these exceptional animals. One of the reasons that initiated this passion for the red fox is their resiliency. They thrive in an array of environments: urban, woodlands, meadows, grasslands, the list goes on, despite many obstacles. I have been fortunate to photograph red foxes in many of these places, however, the environment I personally feel the most compelled to photograph them in is urban locations. Photographing red foxes in strictly pristine wilderness only tells a sliver of their story, and I hope to share the big picture. Urban wildlife has been a strong focus of mine for a while, and as I've learned, they are just as wild, cunning, capable of capturing prey, as their relatives found in the wilderness. I would even argue that they posses greater intelligence. Photographing wildlife in urban settings reveals a glimpse into possible future outcomes of human expansion; it aids in seeing which species can thrive alongside of us, which struggle, and those that sadly parish as we consume & expand. Sharing red foxes' success stories in the city can help spread awareness, foster a connection to nature, and be a way in which to educate the public on coexisting with wildlife. Often times through myths and legends, misdirected fear is spread at sight of any predatory animal, especially in a backyard. With proper education on keeping a distance, not feeding wildlife, and giving them the respect they deserve, conflicts can be eliminated. Any animal that can live alongside of us deserves to have their story told, for it is a remarkable feat.
Here is a glimpse into a few of the fox lives I’ve had the opportunity to photograph over the last 6-7 years. These faces have taught me many lessons in patience, determination, and perseverance. These are serendipitous moments that will be forever treasured.
